The Visitor Services and Retail Manager oversees the day-to-day visitor experience and retail operations at both the Hjemkomst Center and the historic Comstock House.

This position ensures a welcoming, engaging, high-quality experience for all guests while also overseeing the museum's gift shop and consignment program. The manager will recruit, train, and supervise part-time and seasonal visitor services staff, interns, and volunteers, and implement best practices in customer service while supporting the society’s mission through thoughtful product selection and effective visitor engagement.

Key Responsibilities: Visitor Services (Hjemkomst Center and Comstock House): • Supervise and schedule front desk and tour staff (this includes paid part-time staff, volunteers, and student workers) • Maintain high standards of customer service and visitor satisfaction • Oversee admission desk operations and point-of-sale systems • Lead training in visitor engagement, emergency procedures, and accessibility • Monitor front-of-house cleanliness, safety, and visitor communications. • Ensure adequate staffing for weekends, holidays, and special events Retail Operations (Hjemkomst Center Gift Shop): • Manage day-to-day gift shop operations and merchandising based on industry research and marketing strategies. • Oversee inventory, restocking, purchasing, and product displays • Maintain consignment program: onboard consigners, track sales, issue payments • Analyze sales data to inform buying decisions and improve profitability • Expand and improve online sales. Administration and Collaboration: • Develop monthly work schedules for part-time staff • Coordinate with exhibit and programming teams for an aligned guest experience • Handle visitor feedback, complaints, and incidents with professionalism • Maintain and update visitor services and gift shop manuals • Participate in strategic planning for visitor engagement and revenue growth • Open and sometime close the museum at the Hjemkomst

Qualifications: • At least 3 years of experience in retail management, visitor services, hospitality, or a related field • Supervisory experience required • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills • Experience with scheduling, point-of-sale systems, and inventory tracking • Ability to work weekends or evenings as needed, particularly during festivals or special events • Familiarity with museum or nonprofit settings is a plus.

Work Schedule & Compensation: • Full-time: Typical 8:30 to 4:30 M-F with some weekends and evenings required.

• Pay range: $35,000 - $40,000. Benefits: 12 paid holidays, 12 vacation days, 6 Sick and Safety time days; 50% of health insurance premium with the group plan; 3% match of contributions to simple IRA retirement plan
